Surgical Robotics
Surgeon and inventor Catherine Mohr is an expert in the area of surgical robotics. Mohr is the Director of Medical Research at Intuitive Surgical, a high technology surgical robotics company, where she evaluates and directs the development of new robotic surgical procedures, and next generation surgical robots. She is also a part time instructor in the department of Surgery at Stanford School of Medicine where she works in the Goodman Simulation Center in the development of simulation based curriculum for teaching clinical skills. She is the author of numerous scientific publications, and the recipient of multiple design awards. In this TED talk from February 2009, Dr. Mohr tours the history of surgery (and its pre-painkiller, pre-antiseptic past), then demos some of the newest tools for surgery through tiny incisions, performed using nimble robot hands. Fascinating — but not for the squeamish. Publications Clinical Outcomes with Robotic Surgery Ponnusamy K, Mohr CJ, Curet MJ. Curr Probl Surg 2011 sep;48(9): 577-656. Endoscopic exploration and repair of brachial plexus with telerobotic manipulation: a cadaver trial. Mantovani G, Liverneaux P, Garcia JC, Berner SH, Bednar MS, Mohr CJ. J Neurosurg. 2011 Apr 8. Dr. Catherine Mohr is an expert in the field of alternative energy transportation and green building. Dr. Mohr received her BS and MS in mechanical engineering from MIT, and was involved with numerous startup companies in the areas of alternative energy transportation, computer aided design software, and medical devices. She went on to work for many years with Dr. Paul MacCready at AeroVironment developing alternate energy vehicles, high altitude aircraft, and high efficiency fuel cell power systems aimed at reducing our world’s energy consumption and emissions. In a short, funny, data-packed talk at TED U, Catherine Mohr walks through all the geeky decisions she made when building a green new house — looking at real energy numbers, not hype. What choices matter most? Not the ones you think. Publications Energy Transfer System for Electric Vehicles — Part 2: Communication Requirements and Network Architecture Application Appendix for Type C Architecture Systems. Anderson (Mohr) CJ. SAE J2293-2?; Society of Automotive Engineers Standard, November 1999. The Effect of APU Characteristics on the Design of Hybrid Control Strategies for Hybrid Electric Vehicles.
